Optimizing Performance in VDMX for Live Visuals?

Hi everyone,

I have recently started using VDMX for live visual performances and I am loving its flexibility. However…, I am encountering some performance issues, particularly when working with high resolution clips and multiple layers. I would love some advice on optimizing my setup.

I am using a MacBook Pro (M1) with 16GB RAM.
Most of my clips are 4K ProRes files.
I often use multiple layers with various FX chains.

I have some questions in my mind:

Are there specific codecs or resolutions you recommend for smoother playback: ??
What are the best practices for managing FX-heavy layers without lag: ??
Does enabling/disabling certain settings make a noticeable difference: ??

Any tips or resources would be greatly appreciated. I want to ensure smooth performance without sacrificing quality. Thanks in advance !!

Looking forward to learning from this community !!

With Regards,

DanielCCSP

ProRes is not optimized for live playback, it was designed to be a high quality editing codec. For performance, you’ll want to use HAP.

More about codecs in the vdmx docs: Video Codecs and VDMX | VIDVOX Docs

You can use the free AVF Batch Converter in the extras folder when installing VDMX
