How to make vertical video?

I am trying to make vertical video. I have started with the default project (does this have a Template name?); and have tried the 4 Layer VJ Starter. I eject all sources, and delete all FX just to have a clean slate.

I go to Workspace Editor / Layers; and put my resolution in Canvas/Main Output controls (1080x1920); and I see a resized preview with handles. I set the layers to have Sizing Mode Copy, as I am using transparent PNG as my source. And I don’t want to stretch or fit it.

The output in … I guess the Canvas/Main Output? It is a box that displays the final mix but is not in Plugins in Workspace Inspector. The output here shows as streteched which is not the desired result.

The Output Preview window shows my SRC, but because I am using transparent images; it’s difficult to see where the bounding is. My mix is not stretched here.

Thank you.

I’m not sure why the canvas output (?) is in negative; my blend modes should be set to SourceAtop.

Could you send in your project and double check your sizing options? If it is set to stretch or fill, then your image is doing that for the main output.

Are there any resources that would instruct me on how to make a vertical video?

I think the question is, “what are you trying to do?” Or are you simply trying to capture a vertical video?

By default, with the sizing mode set to Fit. If you import a vertical video, it will fit into your main canvas output. (usually a 16:9 / 1280 x 720 or 1920x1080 output.

But if you want to send a 9:16 aspect ratio over syphon, NDI, etc. You can change your main canvas size to whatever, and that’s how syphon will share it.

In this example, I can see in the syphon recorder that the 9:16 content is coming in and the recorder is set to match source, and record a 9:16 video.

Thank you, Cornelius, your thoughtful responses are appreciated. I get about 2-3 hours every week to invest in learning new tools; so I will try to put this into practice next time I am able to. I was unable to forward my project because I had not saved it. Additionally my thinking was that other folks may want to use VDMX for vertical video platforms; so if there was an educational resource it would be a good reference.

I ended up using a different tool; but I missed out on the robust automation tools VDMX6 has. (You can see the animation effect doesn’t really sync) TY

At this point, it may make sense to share my use-case. I layer multiple transparent sources to create compositions. My typical use case is that I do not want a “Fit” or “Scale” Sizing Mode, I want control over the location of each source. For example I may want 4 transparent PNG (rotated 30deg) at the 4 diagonal quadrants of a vertical video composition. I was trying to use the Copy Sizing Mode; which I think is the correct approach?

Maybe it would be good to share a video of your setup. You could always work in a 16:9 canvas (if desired), and use a rotate FX to flip your main output 90 degrees and record a vertical video horizontally. A simple change in the meta data will make it appear to be a 9:16 when you upload it elsewhere.

Additionally, if you need a 2nd screen, you can rotate the desktop on your mac 90 degrees in the screen settings (giving you a 9:16 preview).

Lastly, it looks like you are using Instagram which accepts a 1080x1920 video, but usually compresses it to 720x1280, you could make your main horizontal 16:9 output to be any desired size, and route it through a main canvas output of any desired resolution.
