HAP vs source file huge file size difference

Hi! I converted a 4K H.265 video with file size 255.4 MB to HAP and the new files are 7.27 GB (HAP) and 11.55 GB (HAP 7A). I used the AVF Batch Converter on Mac. Is this kind of huge file size difference normal?

Yes.

"On average file sizes for HAP and HAP Q are often comparable to ProRes 422 – sometimes they will be bigger, sometimes smaller. "

Yes, and if the file size is smaller, then your CPU/GPU (APU) has to do more work to decode it on the fly. Try video editing H.265 4K files, it’s nearly impossible which is why most NLE’s do some sort of preview or conversion processing in the background to get them ready for editing.

I went here (https://hap.video) looking to download HAP. And there is something mentioned about Hap R, but didn’t find it. I did find HAP files here https://github.com/Vidvox/hap-in-avfoundation/releases/tag/1.6.9.4 but there is no HAP R.

edit: here https://github.com/Vidvox/hap-in-avfoundation/releases/tag/1.6.9.4 it looks like Hap R = 7A.

Am I even posting these questions in the right forum, i.e. here ?

Sure, yes HAP 7A is HAP R. You can also use the AVF Batch Converter for HAP R files.
