Aspect ratio

Hi!
I am going to apply to an filmfestival in the genre art movie. And one of the questions in the formula is image format. Three to choose 16:9 4:3 and other.

So if I record in movie rec without changing anything what size should I choose?
And there any changes that really need to be done?

This movie is going to be seen on a movie screen in cinema.

Sincerely A

As you probably know 16:9 is equivalent to 1.77 aspect ratio. And 1280x720 is also a 1.77 ratio and what the Canvas/Main Output defaults to. So if you are fine with that, stick with that. You can change this of course changing the number where 1280 and 720 appear. But as a filmmaker, I think it should depend on the look you want. e.g. if you are making videos that simulate old television then i’d go with a 4:3 ratio and maybe add a bulge effect, or if you want to simulate a 70’s movie screen in Panavision 2.35:1 (standard 35mm anamorphic), 2.20:1 (Super Panavision 70 with spherical lenses), and 2.76:1 (Ultra Panavision 70 with anamorphic lenses). It’s dealers choice. You may want to add letterboxing yourself, since the film festival probably doesn’t have an Ultra Panavision projector. Personally I’d fake it to whatever you aspect ratio you like and assume a 16:9 projector, and letterbox or trim the sides depending on the look of your film. Maybe ask the festival what aspect ratio is native ratio of the theater screen. Movie recording will output whatever settings you specify in Canvas/Main Output. - Cheers
