Metal and black screen

I’ve been using VDMX a long time. Upgrading to 6 pro, I can’t get metal blend modes working. Black screen shows up. I’m posting this in case it helps anyone else.

If I go to my Composition modes in Assets, I noticed a TON of broken (red) modes, including ALL the Metal modes. Under the “-” at the bottom, in that menu, there’s an option, “remove missing”. Doing this removes all the red ones. But, now when opening VDMX, there’s no Metal modes at all.

Digging in further, these seem to come from XCode. I haven’t updated that in YEARS though… so heading to the app store to reinstall Xcode. My guess is the Metal ones will be updated in that. I’ll report back in case this helps anyone else.

Here’s a bit more about the sun setting of QTZ, which is somewhat relevant/reliant on XCode, or was. Thanks David! I had missed that article.

One QTZ patch I kinda can’t live without, is the delay patch. It’d create a on the fly loop with two layers and a delay. Not sure how that was done, as it doesn’t save the loop to disk anywhere… its a buffer in video memory I think. Good stuff. Essential to how I use VDMX.

Ok. XCode finished updating, and still no Metal effects are listed in VDMX 6 pro. HM.

Moving right along… am doing an OS update to Sequoia 15.2 now. Fingers crossed this fixes the missing Metal modes.

No luck after updating to Sequoia. Am at a loss. If anyone figures this out…

Did you delete the old application and reinstall VDMX6 from the latest version after updating to Sequoia?

Hello Seejordan, Good to see you here in the virtual world. Could you please provide info on which hardware and OS you are using.

I had problems going straight from V5 to V6Pro, tested on M1(14.6.1), and iMac Pro (OS 14.6.1).

When I initially tired to install V6pro, I had installation problems, so I deleted VMDX5, 6, and 6Pro, to start clean. That worked, but I lost all favorites and smart links, so be careful with a clean install. I’d recommend backing up all your VDMX projects.

Maybe try deleting VDMX6 and VDMX6Pro. then testing if V5 is working properly, if not then update v5, Then install V6. make sure that functioning properly, then go for V6pro.

Cheers,
-Enki

Tried this, thanks Enki. No luck. So, Vidvox… where do these Metal filters actually come from, is VDMX installing them, or are they part of the OS (ANSWER: OSX)? I’m just about ready to do a full system reinstall.

Interestingly, under the Assets tab, at the top, it says “Fall - 2024 Updated”. And, under Metal Assets, there’s exactly nothing listed.

Also, under System Settings, I see Metal 3 compatible.

Hi @seejordan,

A few questions.

  1. Did you submit a bug report yet (using the built in Help Menu > Report Bug).
  2. When you say filters, I assuming you are referring to FX (since you started this post talking about composition modes). When you start VDMX6 is goes through the ISF folder and converts the ISF shaders to metal. In newer versions of OSX .qtz files are disabled by default (but can re-enabled in the VDMX Preferences).
  3. What does your system specifications say under Graphics? (ideally you would submit a bug report and we’d have all of this information).

Thanks

Submitted a bug, thanks. I was reporting here in case anyone else was running into this. Yes, Composition Modes has nothing listed under the “Metal” menu choice. I only get black output until I switch to a CoreImage mode. I also see a QTZ menu choice in Composition modes, but nothing is listed there (used to use some of these, they were fun, but I get it, Qartz has gone the way of the dodo).

One question: what’s the best way of removing VDMX? I go to applications, move to trash… is that it? I’ve done this many times, still no luck.
